IntroductionWe all feel shy on some occasions. We may go to a party and be overawed by the event or by the people present. We feel uncomfortable and conspicuous; we wish we were somewhere else altogether. Everyone knows how that feels, but some people feel like that much of the time. They may be extremely uncomfortable in company, and their shyness may even make it difficult for them to lead normal lives. For them, shyness is a real problem. If you are one of these people, or if shyness seems to be holding you back, you may wish that there was something you could do to make you less shy. Why can't you be like everyone else, enjoying parties, enjoying meeting people, having boyfriends or girlfriends, being successful in your work and in your social life? Yet no matter how much you wish you were less shy, there seems to be nothing that you can do about it. Shyness seems to be an affliction you are stuck with.On the other hand, we all know someone who did become less shy. It may be a girl who gets a boyfriend. Her friends notice the differenceshe seems to be a new person altogether, full of confidence, enjoying life, her shyness a thing of the past. Or it may be a boy who gets a new job. He is a changed person too. His new responsibility has somehow transformed him and he seems to be less shy and more confident. If it is possible to become less shy through changed circumstances, is there not something we could do for ourselves to make us less shy? Common sense would suggest that there is.
