Now in its 56tli ye.u". the Critics Poll offers an authoritative assessment of the jazz landscape. This year. 117 critics from around the world voted in the Poll, and while some of the artists we're used to seeing at the top of the Poll —including Sonny Rollins, Dave Douglas, Steve Turre. Keith Jarrett, Roy Haynes. Ornette Coleman and Pat Metheny —have won their respective categories once again, some categories boast first-time winners. Christian McBride has captured the Acoustic Bass category for the first time (he's featured in this month's "Blindfold Tesf on Page 98). In addition, banjoist Béla Fleck won Miscellaneous Insuument of the Year for the first dme, beating out Toots Thielemans, and Radiohead nabbed its first Beyond Artist/Group and Beyond Album (/n Rainl)ows) wins. Also, after a two-year absence from the Poll, we have reinstated the Electric Bass category, and Steve Swallow picks up where he left off the last time this category was in the Poll in 2005 as the Critics' top electric bassist. The most exciting element of this year's Critics Poll, however, is the launch of the Hall of Fame Veterans Committee. Twenty-five of the critics who voted in the reguhy Poll also took part in the Veterans Committee. The concept of the Veterans Cotnmittee isn't uniquely ours. We borrowed it from the Baseball Hall of Fame. Many artists who deserve to be in the DownBeat Halt of Fame would probably not get in through the Critics and Readers polls" voting systems. The Veterans Committee should rectify this situation. We plan on this being iUi ;mnual p;irt of tlic Critics Poll, as it should ensure that the DownBeat Hall of Fame Is filled witli all of tlie men and women who offeicd tlie musical innovations and vinuosic playing that have given jazz its rich legacy.
