ON THE BEAT DOWPEAT February 1992 Dancing On A by Dave Helland don't remember who defined jazz as an unpopular form of American music: Murray The K? Tommy Mottola? Ambrose Bierce? While, that may apply to CD sales, judging from the response of personnel managers, business consultants, and professors of business administration to Antonio Garcia's "Musical Self-Defense" (see "Chords" p. 8), the small jazz ensemble is becoming THE model for successful prob-lem-solving organizations. Garcia's main point ("On The Beat" Oct. '91) was that music education is directly tied to "academic excellence and the quality of a community's work force." He contends that bright students and music programs go together. But he also pointed out that a number of businesses use musical examples in their training programs. Motorola, for instance, called on the Northern Illinois Jazz Ellington's Syncopated Problem-Solvers: Johnny Hodges (left) and Otto Hardwick Program, which Garcia coordinates, to help illustrate the concepts of leadership, creativity, and teamwork through music for both their U.S. managers and their top international executives. These ideas are illustrated in Creativity In Organizations—A Jazz Musician's Perspective, a video from the Center For Creative Leadership (CCL), featuring trumpeter Bobby Bradford. Bradford and CCL's Stanley S. Gryskiewicz look at the process of innovation in a fresh setting, that of "a service industry for which there is a particularly urgent, unending requirement for innovation—the jazz music industry." As Bradford explains, "The jazz group expects mistakes and prepares itself to 'dance on a slippery floor.'" The 30-minute video with an accompanying study guide is geared toward an audi- ence of team managers and problem-solvers. Jazz is used as a context in which to discuss innovation and problem-solving. For example, Duke Ellington is seen as a leader who hired workers—musicians—for the uniqueness of their voices and their understanding of the music. He would set a goal— performing a piece he had written—and then leave the workers free to make any responsible decision concerning the music. "Jazz asks you to listen more carefully and to come back repeatedly to look at it again," concludes Bradford. Substitute "a democracy" or "the market" for "jazz" and you begin to understand the lesson that jazz has to teach the society-at-large.
