FOREWORD/INTRODUCTION You hold in your hands the most comprehensive critical guide to movies on DVD and video available. Where other movie-review books contain films that may never be released to video stores, DVD & Video Guide (DVG) concentrâtes only on what you can rent at your local shop or purchase through the mail. Even so, that puts this twenty-first édition at more than 20,000 titles. DVD & Video Guide is also a book written by people who love movies for people who love movies. We treat this annual publication like some kind of holy quest, searching out obscure titles and oddball distributors in order to pack DVG with as many titles as possible. This is why you'11 find more B-movies, foreign films, old-time and spaghetti Westerns, TV movies, direct-to-video releases, silent films, and TV series covered here than in any other movie guide. As in previous years, we have covered all the major movie releases available in stores as well as several months' worth of upcoming titles, which we reviewed while they were in theatrical release. Also, we have gone backward as much as forward, catching up on whatever obscure or previously unreleased titles we may have missed in earlier éditions. We honestly believe that you caonot find a more complete critical review of entertainment on video. In past years, reviews in DVG have been broken down into genre catégories. Now, by popular demand, we are listing all movies together in word-by-word alphabetical order. As our readers have pointed out, so many movies today mix genres—horror with comedy, science fiction with mystery, for example—there are no clear-cut catégories anymore. So we decided it was time to put an end to the confusion. To help you find movies reviewed in this book, we have several features: a cast index, a director index, an index of Academy Award winners, and a complete alphabetical listing of alternate titles at the back of the book. Alternate titles have been listed so that a film like All the Way can be found under their DVD titles, such as, in this case, The Night We Called It A Day. In addition, a bullet (•) has been placed next to each new review. If a movie is available on DVD, it is so indicated. We have included everything available at the time of this edition's publication. DVD releases, however, come out on a regular, weekly basis, so we cannot claim to be complete and up-to-date. A few readers have expressed dismay because we reevaluate films from édition to édition. We feel this is necessary. A good movie might catch us on a bad day or vice versa and lead to a less-than-objective analysis. Some of the better-known film critics balk at being consid-ered consumer guides, but that is exactly what we strive to be. Not
