PREFACE
Two lines of study have occupied much of pep's attention during recent years. The first concerns the problem of growth in the British economy. The second concerns the European Community and its relations with Britain, and pep is indebted to the Ford Foundation for a grant that has made possible this programme of European studies. This book has built upon pep's work in both these fields.
Few attempts have been made at a comparative analysis of economic policies in the three major economies of Western Europe. The reason may be that this is a bigger task than appears at first sight, because it is necessary for specialists on each of the three countries to pool their ideas and knowledge and to compare and analyse them together. This has been made possible, in this book, by the collaboration of its three authors: Geoffrey Denton, Reader in Economics at the University of Reading and formerly on the staff of pep; Murray Forsyth, Lecturer in International Politics at the University of Leicester and likewise formerly on the staff of pep; and Malcolm MacLennan, Lecturer in Applied Economics, Department of Social and Economic Research, University of Glasgow.
