It was a cloudy, overcast day that threatened rain. The brown, mud-colored Savannah River had already swelled up its banks from previous rains, but the two occupants of the small craft paid little heed to the weather. One man, the smaller of the two, kept looking back over his shoulder nervously. The other occupant of the canoe, a giant of a man, showed none of the fear displayed by his companion. His face was stoic as his gray eyes stared straight ahead. His huge hands gripped the oars, and with great thrusts moved the small craft swiftly fprward.
