FOREWORDThis is the sixth edition of "Education in Japana Graphic Presentation", first releasedin 1954 and subsequently revised and enlarged in 1956, 1957, 1959 and 1961. This publicationpresents a general description of the educational system in Japan in order to introduce foreigneducators and others interested in Japanese education to the fundamental aspects of the Japaneseeducational system and to certain relevant facets of its cultural and economic contexts.In this edition new chapters hive been added concerning the relationship between theincrease in the number of students and the economic growth of the country (Chapter 8), theeducational standard of the Japanese people (Chapter 10), the prescribed content of kinder-garten education (Chapter 27), and the Educational Test Research Institute established inJanuary 1963 to improve the university entrance examination system (C hapter 39).
