Beethoven schrieb die Egmont-Musik für eine Neuaufführung des Goetheschen Trauerspiels an der Wiener Hofbühne, die am 24. Mai 1810 stattfand. Die Ouvertüre bringt Charakter und Grundstimmung des Dramas zum Ausdruck, hält aber an der allgemeinen musikalischen Form durchaus fest. Ein beziehungsvolles Zitat aus der Schlußszene (Siegessymphonie) bringt die Koda, T. 301 ff. The overture expresses the character and the atmosphere of the drama, yet preserves the general musical form throughout. In bars 301 and foil, the Coda contains a significant quotation from the closing scene (Symphony of Victory).
