PREFACE May we first repeat a statement from the first edition of this book: " The subjects of converting and conveying heat energy are of similar importance." In recognition of this fact many schools of engineering have recently included a course on heat transfer in the undergraduate curriculum or have, at least, added instruction on heat transfer to the elementary thermodynamics course, thus offering a combined course of these two subjects. When preparing the first edition of our book, mainly for use in such elementary courses, we felt that we should confine its contents to^the very fundamental facts and leave all somewhat more complicated items to graduate study. In fact, we do not know of any more elementary book of similar standard. This seems to have been appreciated by teachers and students alike. However, at the present level of undergraduate education in engineering and requirements in practice, the addition of some slightly more difficult methods and details has been found desirable. Therefore, maintaining the general structure of the work, we inserted quite a few new construction elements to reinforce it; that is, without changing number, sequence, or scope of the chapters, we added or completely revised about sixteen sections of the book. For instance, at the end of the section on heat transfer from a rod heated on one end, it was merely mentioned in the first edition that the equations derived hold also for fins. Now a detailed section, " Heat Transfer from Fins," has been added. Similarly, when dealing with the log mean temperature difference in heat exchangers, we foraferly indicated only that for complex types of heat exchangers correction factors had been worked out. Now graphs for shell-and-tube exchangers with different numbers of passes are included in order to give the student an idea of how such items are handled in practice. Furthermore, instead of restricting the treatment of steady-state conduction to the simple cases of infinitely wide plane plates and infinitely long cylinders, two sections have been added, one dealing with the conduction on edges and corners of walls, the other dealing with pieces of more complicated shape. In the last-mentioned case the graphical method of curvilinear squares has been used. In general we have inserted sections on graphical and
