ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Elisabeth Schumann made some biographical notes with me before she died (which were particularly useful for the early years). My father, Walther Puritz, also gave me much valuable information about my mother. Apart from these, many people have been very helpful, not least my wife Biddy, who did a certain amount of advising and editing until ill-health made this no longer possible.
For much useful information I also have to thank John Amis, Trude el Bedell, Anita Bild, Mary Bok, Lisi Bontemps, Franz, Gustl and Käthe Breuer, Ruth D'Arcy-Thompson, Gitta Deutsch, Harry Goddard Owen, Hubert Greenslade, Winifred Hall, Peter Hey worth, Lene Jung, Rudolf Klein, Lotte Klemperer, Trudehen Koch-Lissauer, Walter Legge, Lotte Lehmann, Dorothy Maddison, Bernard Miles, Gerald Moore, Ivor Newton, Maria Olszewska, Lisa Reitler, Suze Rueff, Erna and Jacques Samuel, Desmond Shawe-Taylor, Alice and Franz Strauss, Annelise Tchounikine-Bontemps, David Thaw, Emmy Tillett, Claire Watson, Karl Wisoko, the Archives Department of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.
For advice and encouragement in finding a publisher, both I and my daughter Joy wish to thank Patrick Carnegy, Mr and Mrs Frank Cuder, Mark Hamilton, Elizabeth and David McDowall, Joyce Rathbone, Clare Stevens and Tom Stacey.
We are also most grateful to Paul Richards for his help with computer-related matters.
