Preface An attempt has been made to collect together here the technical terms and definitions in the fields of hydraulics, soil engineering and foundation engineering as generally used in the English language area and as recommended by the respective professional societies. This book is the result of a thorough study of many glossaries, papers, reports, books and technical journals. Its aim is to assist the standardization of definitions needed in these fields and to facilitate the communication of engineering knowledge among engineers working in these fields in different countries. In spite of very careful studies of the international literature, a work such as this is bound to have certain shortcomings. The author hopes, however, that with the aid of constructive criticism and suggestions such shortcomings may be eliminated from a later edition.
