ForewordIt has been said that in teaching the meanings of words, illusiration is often more useful than definition.This book at the elementary level has been written for beginners to enjoy. Its object is to help the learner to start reading and speaking English, to train him or her for the next step under the guidance of a teacher .Using ample illustration and adequate words, patterns and drill charts proposed for repetition, the book offers the pupil's eye and ear simple, flexible structures and lively situations. In this way, it encourages the reader to gradually develop the knowledge acquired.The book is divided into two main parts, the first (Elementary Structures) being an introduction to the above-mentioned words and patterns of sentences. The second part (Everyday Situations) is designed to be a basis for both teacher and learner to make the transfer from elementary structures to everyday speech.With a view to extending the learner's vocabulary, supplementary readings have been added which together with a few songs, round off this method of language learning.THE AUTHOR
