LESSON ONEA Sound Mind in a Sound Body"Right, two, three, four. Left, two, three, four. Up, two, three, four. Down, two, three, four . . ."To the sound of a lively tune coming from the wireless Sasha Istomin, a student of the Moscow University, was doing his P. T. exercises in his singlet and shorts in front of the open window. As he bent and stretched his arms and legs and circled and straightened his trunk, the muscles rippled on his sunburnt body and his chest heaved and fell to the rhythm of his breathing. The tune changed and Sasha began running on the spot, marked time'as the music slowed down, and when it gradually faded av/ay he grabbed his towel and ran to the bathroom for his morning shower. When he came back he found Boris Yegorov, his roommate, lazily pulling on his trousers."Morning, Boris!" Sasha greeted him merrily, but Boris only grunted. At length, however, he said in a peeved voice:"You're in the pink of condition^ as usual, but you should remember other chaps want to get a sleep sometimes. Yesterday I attended five lectures and then I reviewed Old English grammar up to the small hours of the morning^. We have a seminar today, you may remember.""Of course 1 remember. 1 attended the same lectures and prepared for the seminar as well. But besides that 1 also found time to help dig up the flower-beds for the winter, practised on the piano for nearly an hour and played a game of volley-ball with the course team.""You must have been born under a lucky star. 1 can't find time enough for my studies, let alone for gardening and sport."
