Introduction
English Zone is a four-level English course for upper primary students. It aims to take beginners and false beginners to a level at which they can communicate about subjects that interest them. The course introduces language gradually and in context, in a building-block approach to make vocabulary learning easy. The approach to learning taken by English Zone reflects the changes that students are experiencing between the ages of 10-14 and bridges the gap between the language learning adopted at primary school and in secondary education. The four-level course structure means that both levels 1 and 2 can be used as starter levels, allowing teachers greater flexibility with individual classes.
Description of the course
English Zone Student's Books
English Zone Student's Books contain eight units per year In addition, there is a Starter unit in levels 1 and 2 and Revision units in levels 3 and 4. After every two units there is a student's Self check section.
Each unit is based around a topic, and contains:
• Presentation dialogue with supporting photographs
• Vocabulary
• Speaking practice
• Pronunciation
• Language zone: grammar focus and practice
• Skills zone: reading, listening, writing and speaking
• Situations: dialogue and practice (functional language)
• Culture zone: cultural information and project work
• Motivating songs and games
• Study skills appear regularly in levels 2-3
After every two units:
• Self check: revision and self monitoring
• Learning diary: reflection on personal progress
• Story zone: a fun cartoon story to recycle the language of the preceding units
Presentation material
The presentation material is on the first page of each unit. The presentation dialogues feature the adventures of Matthew and his friends. The dialogues have several functions. They introduce topics that appeal to the age group and which are developed later in the unit. They present new grammar and provide an entry point for vocabulary development. The dialogues and the accompanying photographs also provide insights into British life, helping students to develop their cultural awareness.
Comprehension
The comprehension tasks provide a quick check of students' understanding of the presentation material. If students cover up the presentation dialogues while they listen to them, the comprehension sections can provide additional listening exercises.
Vocabulary
New vocabulary is taught in sets and is based around a topic to help students remember and learn. The new vocabulary is recycled naturally throughout each of the activities in the unit.
Pronunciation
These sections include practice at word and sentence level. As pronunciation is introduced with new vocabulary, students have the opportunity to hear and say the words in context.
Practice
A practice stage enables students to activate the new language.
Language zone
The Language zone aims to introduce students to key grammatical concepts of the language. The presentation of new grammar is systematic and there is thorough, controlled practice of each new concept. This is then followed by opportunities for practice in more meaningful contexts and tasks.
Look and learn!
The Look and iearn! boxes in the Language zone and the Situations sections are used to highlight or clarify areas of usage that students should learn. They provide information in quick, manageable chunks to support students' understanding.
