Talking Together
Discussing a Problem
To read and think over
Some of the boys and girls in Miss Lane's class wanted to play baseball on the playground. Others thought it would be better to play softball there. Here is the short discussion which the class had about the problem:
bill: Why can't we play baseball? I'd like to learn to play baseball well.
tom: It would be dangerous to play basebaU on a playground where small children are playing. A basebaU that is thrown or hit hard can hurt a person if it hits him. Lou: Besides, it takes more room. ben: What takes more room, Lou?
lou: I mean that more room is needed for playing baseball. We coiild have two games of softball going at the same time. We don't have room for more than . . .
sue: Isn't it dangerous to try to catch a speedy basebaU barehanded? sam: Yes, it is. My brother broke a finger doing that. If we're going to play baseball, each of us should have a good mitt or glove. joe: I don't have enough money to buy a glove. Do you. Jack? jack: No, I haven't. That is one reason why I want to play softball. There is another reason, too. Most of the girls could play softbaU. I know a few girls who can catch, throw, and hit as well as most of us boys.
frank: I agree with Bill. SoftbaU is a game for sissies.
