John Dent is a medical graduate of Cambridge University, Cambridge, and St Thomas' Hospitál, London, UK. Shortly after becoming a member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP; London, UK) in 1971 Professor Dent emigrated to Australia where he trained in speciálist clinical gastroenterology. He received his doctorate (PhD) from Monash University, Victoria, Australia in 1978. This thesis dealt with patterns of function and control of the lower oesophageal sphincter. Since completion of his PhD he has worked in post-doctoral research at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Wisconsin, USA, and then subsequently at the Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide, Australia. For the last 15 years Professor Dent has been Director of the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and General Medicine at the Royal Adelaide Hospitál, Adelaide. His research interests encompass the field of acid-peptic disorders with a special focus on reflux disease, as well as normál and disordered gastrointestinal motor function in humans. John Dent alsó has a strong interest in the basic science relevant to the control of normál and disordered gastrointestinal motor function.
