Preface
Essentials of Clinical Geriatrics is intended as a practical guide for primary care physicians and other practitioners who provide care to elderly persons. The text presupposes a basic knowledge of medicine. Emphasis is given to those aspects of care that are different when treating the elderly. We have deliberately not written a handbook of geriatrics. Pathophysiology and basic gerontological research have been held to a minimum in order to emphasize practical information. For those interested in reading more about a subject, we have provided suggested readings at the end of each chapter.
The volume is organized into three parts. The first (Chapters 1 through 3) addresses the medical differences associated with the aging patient and how these are translated into approaches to geriatric
