INTRODUCTION
This reader has been compiled to provide language support for courses held on the various issues of the European Union by the Department of Regional Economics of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Miskolc.
The main objective of the language component is to provide the course participants with an insight into and understanding of the professional public administration and legal language of the European Union. Civil servants can only meet the challenges of their profession if they are able to read and work with the documents on regional development, read and answer calls for applications in original and prepare their own documents and reports in the appropriate language for the European Union.
The texts and passgaes are taken from a wide range of books, textbooks and publications of the European Union listed in the bibliography. They are presented here without any changes (except for the reference numbers) and are unabridged as it is their linguistic value that makes them appropriate for these courses. They are meant to present the vocabulary, genres and various points of usage in the professional language of the European Union. They have been selected with a view to the themes of the academic programs and offer ample possibilities for acquiring the professional language of the administration, legislation, regional policy, the financial policy and coordination, economics, project management and various reports used in the European Union and its agencies. The texts also have been matched to the level of languages proficiency of the course participants.
The reader is organised in three major parts: the first part is on law, the second on economics and the third one comprises articles from a number of English language periodicals, all dealing with various aspects of the European Union. There is an appendix of abbreviations, which adds furter value to the reader. The English-Hungarian vocabulary covers the vocabulary and expressions of the first two parts.
The editor hopes that users of the reader will find the passages challenging and will benefit from their professional language studies also in their future work.
