USING YOUR TRAVELBOOK The purpose of the AAA Europe TravelBook is to make your trip as smooth and enjoyable as possible. Whether you're an explorer, a sports enthusiast, history buff or just plain curious, you'll find many appealing things to see and do. The wealth of facts, statistics and descriptions in this publication provide detailed icnowledge about places of interest throughout Europe. The information in this guide is based on data supplied by the Automobile Association of Britain and on careful research at AAA. All copy is accurate at press time; however, since material is necessarily prepared in advance of the publication date, there is always the possibility that changes will occur after the guide is printed. If you become aware of material that is inaccurate, please write to us at AAA Member Comments, Box 61, 1000 AAA Dr., Heathrow, FL 32746-5063. The text for each country begins with an introduction that provides a broad picture of the nation. This section includes such specific topics as history, food, sports, travel, lodging and tipping. An orientation map for each country pinpoints the listed towns; coordinates (A-3, for example) following place names relate to the orientation map. The Things To Know box gives helpful information and addresses at a glance. Next, for the larger destinations, comes the Principal Touring Areas section, which describes the various regions of the country. The Points of Interest section for each country lists cities alphabetically according to the proper local spelling. Should that spelling differ from a more widely known English variation, the English version is listed as a cross-reference. Political subdivisions, populations and elevations greater than 2,500 feet (762 m) follow the city name. Maps accompany descriptions of certain major cities. Attractions appear alphabetically under the nearest listed community. After the descriptive information come the days and, in many instances, the hours and seasons the attraction is open. Next come the admission prices. Because of currency fluctuations and varying information, specific admission prices are not shown for all attractions. "Admission is charged" at the end of the listing identifies others for which there is an admission fee. Children under the lowest age specified are admitted free if accompanied by an adult. Days, months and age groups written with a hyphen are inclusive (for example, 6-11 means 6 through 11). TRAVEL ADVISORIES The U.S. Department of State issues Consular Information Sheets and Travel Warnings concerning serious health or security conditions that might affect U.S. citizens. They can be obtained at U.S. embassies and consulates abroad, regional passport agencies in the United States and from the Citizens Emergency Center, 2201 C St. N.W., Room 4811, Department of State, Washington, DC 20520; phone (202) 647-5225. Consular Information Sheets provide information about entry requirements, cur-. rency regulations, health conditions, security, political disturbances, areas of insta-" bllity and drug penalties. A Travel Warning is issued when the situation in a country is dangerous enough for the Department of State to recommend that Americans not travel there. In addition, travelers are urged to remain abreast of regional events and lo con-J tact their AAA travel agent or air or sea carrier for the latest updates. U.S. CUSTOMS INFORMATION The helpful booklet "Know Before You Go" lists and explains all U.S. Custom"^ regulations for travelers going abroad and returning. It is available from the U.S.^ Customs Service, P.O. Box 7407, Washington, DC 20044. -
