European Survey on Cardiac Interventions, Open Heart Surgery, PTCA, Cardiac Catheterisation in 1993 [antikvár]

1. Introduction The Institute for Cardiac Survey - European Registry was established in 1990 by the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. The task of this Institute is to monitor cardiac Interventions defined as open heart surgery, interventional cardiology as heart catheterisation and percutaneous coronary angioplasty (PTCA). The main goal is to collect data on cardiac interventions to observe the interactions of those interventions as well as to show the changing pattern and to establish a means of planning future financial resources based on real necessity. The European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the European Chapter of the International Society of Cardiac Surgery were very appreciative and agreed to support the 1993 Survey which was also supported by the WHO with the specific aim to extend the European survey internationally to define cardiac care on cardiac interventions worldwide - a first attempt is made at the end of this report. A conference on cardiac interventions, to be held in 1996, with reference to recommendations to the WHO is being prepared. In August 1994 a preliminary report was presented to the advisory board. Participants were Günter Alber, Tom Armitage, John S. Bailey, Elek Bodor, Herbert Bogner, Kari Bornschein, Jan Cerny, Richard E. Clark, Julián Fraile, W.W. George, Ulrich Gleichmann, Peter Kalmar, Berndt Lüderitz, Jorge Martinell, Volker Mühlberger, Sigurd Nitter-Hauge, Tadeusz Jan Otto, José L. Pomar, Jose Roquette, Wilhelm Rutishauser, Peter Satter, Herwig Schmidinger, J.C. Schoevaerdts, Paul Sergeant, Konrad Steinbach, Eberhard Struck, Felix Unger, Freddy E. Vermeulen, Guy de Voghel and Janis Volkolakovs. This 1993 report compiles the fourth complete European Survey on open heart surgery, the third on PTCA and cardiac catheterisation. Within the five years of existence the Institute for Cardiac Survey has been compiling a considerable amount of data, which provides an accurate ground for work and makes estimations more precise. In 1994 the response was very prompt and punctual so that a first preliminary report could be presented to the advisory board of the Institute In August 1994 and in September 1994 to the General Assemblies of the European Chapter of the International Society of Cardiovascular Surgery in Berlin as well as to the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery in The Hague. Both societies are willing to contribute to the next survey. The European Society of Cardiology is again invited to participate and assist us In gaining the data.
