1 - MAY FOURTEENTHA HUNDRED MILES SOUthcaSt of Ambrose Light, off New York City, the sea deepens from the shallow water of the continental shelf into the abyss of the Atlantic Ocean. Long swells rise and heave against the great buttress of the continent. This is the demarcation that mariners call the hundred-fathom line. Here the sea changes color from dark green to a deep cobalt that has something of the night in it.Nearly sixty miles seaward, a deserted expanse of water was broken by the abrupt emergence of a periscope. The slender shaft rose into the darkness of a moonless night and left a boiling wake, sparkled with phosphorous. It made a slow, cycloptic survey of the horizon as it rushed through the water. Then more of the periscope appeared, followed by a black, glistening superstructure. The monster bow broached the surface, and there was a great upheaval from the depths as a submarine came into view. Now added to the sound of a hght wind on the face of the sea came the muffled whine of turbines and the hiss of water along sleek sides. The vacant bridge was quickly peopled by dark figures, and the strange monster became a human contrivance.
