FOREWORD
This book is designed to help you if you already know a httle Spanish, perhaps learned a good while ago at school or in evening classes, and since then largely forgotten, or if you have recently worked through an elementary Spanish course (such as Teach Yourself Spanish in this series) and now want to advance further. While it is intended primarily for older people who have left school, and who either in evening classes or at home want to improve their Spanish, the book will be also found useful for Sixth Form pupils who are studying for the various levels of the General Certificate of Education, who need a thorough revision of grammatical details, and who will enjoy the wide acquaintance with literature introduced in the last section of each lesson.
Whatever your reason for reviving or extending your Spanish, the book will help you. Each of the twenty lessons is in four parts : grammar, conversation, commercial Spanish, and extracts from Spanish literature. The grammar section, while not pretending to be entirely complete, provides extremely careful explanations and practice exercises to help you to overcome all the chief difíiculties. The conversations show you how modem Spanish is spoken, and careful study of these will give you an invaluable store of phrases and expressions that you will find useful in conversation at any time—special care has been taken not to include any of those slangy expressions (common to all languages) which a native can use effectively but which sound objectionable when used by a foreigner. In addition, these conversations, which are between four friends, two English travellers and two Spaniards, follow the course of a holiday journey through Spain from San Sebastián to Seville, and they contain many unobtrusive hints about what to do and to expect in Spain. Two famous Spanish legends are included in the later lessons in the conversation sections. The third section of each lesson gives you an introduction
