FOREWORDThe purpose of this book is to teach students how to speak English. The plan of the book is simple. Each lesson consists of the following: 1) an easy reading selection worked around certain basic vocabulatywith ten accompanying questions; 2) an oral drill in which one grammar principle is introduced; ten questions also accompany this drill; 3) a section, General Questions and Review, in which about thirty additional questions are given; the first ten of these questions are related either in vocabulary or in grammar to the two groups of questions above; the remaining twenty questions are of a review nature, based on the material of preceding lessons and designed to keep ail of this material fresh and active. In each lesson there are thus offered at least fifty questions to be answered orally. Obviously, such a method will give the student much őpportunity to speak. He will also get regular and daily practice in the use of every-thing which he learns. Some fluency must inevitably resuit.The following teaching suggestions should bé helpful to the teacher:1.Require of students direct, complété, and automatic answers. If answers are slçw or hésitant, repeat questions several rimes or demand more préparation at home.2.Have students practice ail answers at home tnany rimes' preferably aloud. Also, never work in class with material unpracticed at home by students. Work, instead, for speed and automaricity on familiar material. Five questions, previously prepared by students at home, can often be asked while one answer on unfamiliar material is being slowly elicited.3.Supplément ail questions by slight variations on the basic pattern of the question. If the question is, "What color are your shoes?", ask the next student, "What color is your shirt?" Ask the next, "What color is your tie?" and so on. Not only can many additional questions thus be asked but the lesson greatly enlivened. Also, keep jumping irregularly from student to student, so that ail students are kept alert and active.
