Introduction
At first, noise became objectionable
It was during the 1920's that people first began to pay attention to the exhaust noise of automobiles. The exhaust gas had to be channeled away from the engine. Also, a silencer was installed into the piping system in order to reduce the worst noise. Hardly anybody thought about the emission of poisonous exhaust components at that time. For this reason, nothing was done about it until after WW II.
During the fifties, exhaust noise was reduced even further. However, the problem of exhaust gas pollution did not enter the public consciousness until the sixties.
