ForewordThis collection of essays is the result of a session on Exile, Identity and Language, held as part of the International Colloquium Exiles 200], organized by the European Research Centre of Kingston University, England in late May and early June of 2001 at the beautiful medieval Herstmonceux Castle in East Sussex, England. The spiritus movens behind this undertaking was Professor Lieve Spaas from Kingston University, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank her for her enthusiasm and encouragement. The papers presented by session participants covered a wide range of topics and triggered many lively discussions between themselves and with the audience, making the session an unforgettable experience. The topic also touched a personal chord in all of us, releasing memories that could have been difficuh to deal with, but for the supportive environment created during the session. We would like to thank all the participants for their involvement before the conference, as well as for their support in the process of getting this collection ready for pubUcation. Working with you and meeting you in England was a great pleasure. As linguists, we started with a relatively narrow and purely linguistic vision of the session and you helped us to realize that the problems of language and identity in exile go beyond the borders of any single discipline, like they go beyond the limits of any one ethnic or political group.The Colloquium led to three fiirther book publications; Travel and Exile: Postcolonial Perspectives, edited by Charles Forsdick and published by the Association for the Study of Caribbean and African Literature in French, 2001, Imaginaire et écriture de l'exil, edited by Tivadar Gorilovics and Pierre Glaudes, published by University of Debrecen Press in association with Presses Universitaires de Toulouse, 2002 and a book on Cultures of Exile: Visual Dimensions of
