INTRODUCTIONThis book is one in a series of works by Russian writers designed for students of Russian.The books of the series will be adapted for students who have worked through an elementary Russian course. Future books will extend the range in grammar and vocabulary.The present collection includes fables, tales and stories by the great Russian writer Lev Tolstoi (1828-1910), and his short novel A Captive in the Caucasus.These works, with the exception of the story Poor People^ are taken from Tolstoi's books The New Alphabet and Russian Readers, which were meant for reading material for Russian schools and were first published in 1875. These books helped generations of Russian children to learn to read, and they are read with pleasure even by adults.The stories and fables chosen for this edition are profoundly human, stressing the common sense, resourcefulness and high moral standard of ordinary people.The original text has been abridged and adapted. Slang and dialectal words have been omitted and the syntax has been simplified.
