PrefaceKnowledge of cardiac function has increased greatly with the advent of new methodology. This growth has not been limited to any particular disciplineindeed, significant contributions have been made in the physiology, pharmacology, biochemistry, and structure of cardiac muscle. With this in mind, a conference organized by the Cardiac Muscle Society was held in August of 1966 under the auspices of the Gordon Research Conferences. Investigators representing different disciplines were brought together in an attempt to correlate their respective information on cardiac function. The purpose in publishing submitted manuscripts is to provide the interested investigator and student a ready reference to recent advances and to delineate some promising new frontiers in cardiac muscle research. Many new concepts are put forth here foi the first time, and some older ones are critically re-evaluated in the light of new information. For the professional student of cardiac muscle research, the editors would reiterate J. M. Keynes' admonition that "the difficulty lies, not in the new ideas, but in escaping from the old ones."Ralph Tanz Frederic Kavaler Jay RobertsNew York October, 1967
