INTRODUCTIONThe strength of the Hungarian Foreign Trade Bank (MKB) during its more than half a century of operation has always maintained its high standard and reliable services aligned to the needs of its customers, and does so to this day. Although the basic principles ruling the Bank's operations remain unchanged, enormous changes have, however, occurred regarding the scope of customers, services and the manner of accessing them. Now in 2002, the MKB is not only the leading bank of the corporate sector but is also among the biggest in the area of retail services. The full-scale services traditionally provided to the big companies represent a goodfoundation for offering similar standard financial services to the small- and medium- sized enterprises. The Bank has simplified and continuously develops loan evaluation sj-tems, by which the loan application of entrepreneurs can be evaluated within few days. MKB also states programs, which are set up upon the Bank's initiative and aimed at alleviating the capital needs of enterprises. These are the hallmark of the Bank's commitment to small enterprises, a token of the future of the Hungarian economy. The Bank's retail services now cover all areas of finance; the MKB offers a number of exclusive services and was the first to introduce some of the others into the market (e.g. Euro-based housing loans and personal loans. Euro-based bank cards). As reflected by the services linked to the Euro, the MKB has every intention of becoming both a corporate and a retail bank for the long term, and for this reason applies the provisions and standards of the European Union in risk and customer management. It can be safely said that the Bank's activities are already "EU-conform".Nowdays handling of finatKial transactions is inseparable from technical development. For this reason the Bank pays special attention to the development of electronic channels. By means of the new services offered, customers can count on the Bank's help either at home or anywhere else in the world.Development is essential for the basic principles - quality, comfort, security -inscribed in MKB's logo to become permanent attributes associated with the Bank in the minds of our customers. We are proud to report that our results have proven the correctness of our principles and practice. The MKB's profit before taxation totalled 15,149 million HUF in 2001 - 57.3percent more than in 2000 - a record in the Bank's history. Turnover increased by 14.7percent, totalling 903.3 billion HUF by the end of the year. These results, however, don't make us presumptuous. We firmly believe that banking is based on confidence and on the satisfaction of our customer's needs. This is the secret of a long-term partnership.
