The 9th Congress of the CIEC held in Budapest, Hungary, on June 11-16,1984, was a great event not only in the history of the CIEC but alsó in that of Hungarian agricultural science. The congress was attended by more than 500 participants representing more than 35 countries and international organizations. Specialists from 4 continents - from countries of different political, economic and social systems as well as of different natural conditions - participated, delivered lectures, renewed old friendships and established new ones among the experts of all branches of science, technology, research, education and production related to fertilizers. The site of the congress was the headquarters of the Federation of Technical and Scientific Societies (MTESZ) in Budapest where the offices of the Hungarian Society of Agricultural Sciences, the main Hungarian organizer of the congress, are alsó situated. On Monday, June 11,1984, at the opening session under the chairmanship of Prof. Dr. I. LÁNG (Hungary), president of the congress, two introductory papers were presented: 1)50 years of CIEC activities by CIEC president Prof. Dr. Dj. JELENlC (Yugoslavia) and CIEC vice-president Prof. Dr. E.WELTE (Fed. Rep. Germany), and 2)Agriculture and the use of fertilizers in Hungary by Prof. Dr. G. SOÓS (Hungary), president of the Hungarian Society of Agricultural Sciences. In the morning on the llth, 12th, 14th and 15th of June the plenary sessions were held, in the afternoon on the llth, 12th and 15th and in the morning on the 13th the working group sessions, and on the 15th the closing session took place. The poster session (exhibition) was open for visitors during the entire congress. The papers of the working groups are grouped according to their sections. However, for practical reasons, we did not always follow the sequence of presentation of the papers within the different working groups. Like the papers of the poster session, they were assigned to that of the working group dealing with the corresponding subject. A great number of Hungarian experts as well as all the interested institutions participated in the organization of the congress; however, the Hungarian Society of Agricultural Sciences and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences carried the greatest weight of the job. Due to the unprecedented shortness of the preparation time for the congress, which was practically less than a year, not only the organizers of the congress but alsó the editors of this book had to face quite a number of expected and unexpected difficulties. The great interest in the congress and the large number of papers subrnitted resulted in several problems in the course of preparing the manuscripts for publication. The editorial board and the organizers of the congress decided to publish the entire material of the congress, including all the plenary lectures and contributions, the papers of the working groups as well as that of the poster session. Papers, subrnitted but not presented, were published if suitable. In the first volume of the publication the plenary lectures, the contributions to them and the generál conclusions are printed, while the second and third volumes contain the rest of the contributions and communications. The large number of subrnitted papers and the great diversity of their structure, length and approach as well as of their English have required a firm editorial attitűdé. The time after the congress has been too short for contacting all the authors concerned to ask them for improvements and corrections on their own contributions and papers. In order to push the material into a form fit for printing, the editors took the responsibility and the very difficult and sometimes troublesome task of processing all the manuscripts. We are fully aware that this cannot result in a work of the same polish as a longer and more detailed editorial procedure would have, but, as the Romans put it: 'Bis dat qui cito dat'. We wanted to publish as early as possible for the benefit of the many readers who need the pro-
