Foreword
With the publication of Yilm Music 2, the Film Music Society is fulfilling many of its purposes and goals, such as creating public awareness of the artistic value of film music, educating the public, documenting the history of fdm music, and publishing scholarly works. Publishing a book is a grand undertaking for any organization. As president of the Society I am proud to present the second in a continuing series devoted to furthering film music research.
Included in these pages is a broad scope of material ranging from the 1940s to the present. Essays are devoted to the documentary scores of Golden Age composers Virgil Thomson and Aaron Copland; opera films; soundtrack cross-promotion at United Artists; film music as a forum on the Internet; and the teaching of film music in a liberal arts curriculum. Film Music 2 also includes analysis of scores by Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Patrick Doyle; an oral history with songwriters Jay Livingston and Ray Evans; a history of the music of Gail Kubik; and a biography of Moog synthesizer artist Paul Beaver.
The Film Music Society is a volunteer-based organization devoted to promoting the art and craft of film music. The Society's activities include the quarterly publication of The Cue Sheet and the preservation of film scores in both written and audible form. FMS holds conferences and honorary awards dinners, and provides many services through its website at www.filmmusicsociety.org.
This volume is dedicated to film music historian Tony Thomas, author of Music for the Movies and Fi/m Score: A View from the Podium, as well as nearly thirty other books on film
