Editor's Foreword
An illustrated book about the animated film? A static survey of a perpetually moving medium? It Is of course very difficult to give a reliable Impression of the artistic quality of a film In a few frames or even a short sequence. We were fully aware of this problem, but the success of our first anthology of film and television graphics had proved that there was a real need for such a work, so we proceeded to collect material for a second volume. The items we received were in some cases technically unsatisfactory, but we have done all In our power to attain optimum reproduction and to secure sufficient Information for our captions and credits.
Anyone who leafs through the resulting book Is likely to be fascinated by the great variety apparent in the personal styles of the contributing artists. Each endeavours in his own way to make use of the great creative potential of the animated film. It Is to be hoped that this International survey of the best and most interesting work now being done will encourage other artists to turn their hands to this so Important medium of the mass communication age.
Some encouragement In this direction Is already being provided by the International festivals of the animated film which are organized at Annecy and Mamala, Zagreb, Oberhausen, Ottawa, Melbourne and elsewhere. These meetings are of the greatest value In keeping film-makers Informed of the work their colleagues are doing and In facilitating the exchange of ideas and experience.
The book of course owes a great deal to all those artists and producers who took the trouble to submit material for It. And a special word of thanks must also go to the six authors whose Introductory texts are such a valuable contribution to it.
