ForewordVorwortThe foreigner Icnows Finland if at all as a land of midnight sun, pine forests, a thousand lakes or cold winters. By all means, but we believe that the Finnish landscape has much more to show. Even when we began planning this work, our basic idea was to present the richness of our country's natural beauty to foreign readers. Above all, we wished to create a record of the Finnish natural and cultivated landscapes, since it is a regrettable fact that also in our country these original and harmonic landscapes are endangered by the actions of man, urbanisatioil, industrialisation and traffic facilities.A decisive contribution to the success of this task was made by the experience and skill of the main photographer, Matti A. Pitkanen. His objective coincided with that of the publisher: to erect a milestone in the photographical representation of the Finnish landscape. In the foreword to the original Finnish edition of this work, Matti A. Pitkanen states: "I accepted the task of illustrating this work as a major gesture of confidence on the part of Valitut Palat. With the aid of my pictures, I can give the reader some glimpses of the natural beauty of our native country. We can consider ourselves very fortunate that our living environment consists of virtually unpolluted waters, extensive forests, a rich island world and northerly wildernesses. As the inhabitants of a country with bright summer nights, blue lakes and glistening snow-covered slopes, we are surrounded by a natural beauty that is granted to few other nations. We must only remember that nature is the common property of all generations; today's generation may derive benefit from their natural surroundings, but they may not be damaged in any way."This book, which was published during the celebrations marking the diamond anniversary of Finnish independence, was very positively received by the public and the entire Finnish-language edition was soon sold out. We are happy to be able to state that this was more than a fleeting success six months after it had been published, the book was chosen by The Committee on Finnish Book Art, as one of "the most beautiful landscape and picture collections in Finland", for inclusion in the "Collection of Élite Books". Because of this, and encouraged by numerous inquiries, Valitut Palat Oy decided to publish an English-German version. The photographs and all other illustrations remain unchanged, but the text had to be condensed and adapted. For this work, in which the interests of foreign readers were taken into account, Valitut Palat expresses its sincerest thanks to Veikko M. Neuvonen and Arno Rautavaa-Special thanks is due to the translators, Gregory Coogan and Hans-Joachim Zimmering, for their successful interpretation of the text, a task in which they had to overcome the additional problem of matching translations of two different lengths together and into the exact space provided.We hope that the pictures and information in this book will help the readers to form a conception of the beauty of our country in the remote North.Helsinki, 1.8. 1978The Editorial BoardDem Ausländer ist Finnland falls überhaupt als Land der Mitternachtssonne, der Wälder, der Tausend Seen oder des kalten Winters bekannt. Warum nicht, aber wir meinen, dass die fitmische Landschaft viel mehr vorzuzeigen hat. Den Reichtum der Natur unseres Landes vorzustellen war schon bei der Planung des vorliegenden Werks unser Leitgedanke. Vor allem wollten wir in ihm die finnische Natur- und Kulmrlandschaft festhalten. Denn leider sind diese ursprünglichen und harmonischen Landschaftstypen auch in unserem Lande von menschlicher Tätigkeit, Verstädterung, Industrie und Verkehr bedroht.Zum Gelingen dieses Projekts hat entscheidend die einschlägige Erfahrung und das Können des Hauptfotografen des Werks, Matti A. Pitkanen, beigetragen. Seine Zielstellung war mit der des Verlegers identisch: in der fotografischen Darstellung der finnischen Landschaft einen Meilenstein zu errichten. Im Vorwort zur finnischsprachigen Ausgabe dieses Werks schreibt Matti A. Pitkanen: "Ich habe die Illustrationsaufgabe für dieses Werk als grossen Vertrauensbeweis seitens Valitut Palat entgegengenommen. Mit meinen Landschaftsfotos kann ich dem Betrachter Streiflichter von der Schönheit der Natur unseres Heimatlandes zeigen. Wir können uns sehr glücklich schätzen, dass wir als Lebensumwelt an sich saubere Gewässer, weitläufige Wälder, eine reiche Inselwelt und die nordischen Wildnisse erhalten haben. Als Bewohner eines Landes mit hellen Sommernächten, blauen Seen und leuchtendweissen Schneehängen erfahren wir in unserer Umgebung eine Naturschönheit, wie sie nur wenigen Völkern vergönnt ist. Nur dürfen wir nicht vergessen, dass die Natur gemeinsames Eigentum aller Generationen ist; die heutige Generation darf Nutzen aus ihr ziehen, aber sie darf nichts von ihr zerstören."Das vorliegende Werk, das während der 60-Jahr-Feiern der Selbständigkeit Finnlands erschienen ist, hat bei den Lesern ein positives Echo gefunden: die gesamte finnischsprachige Auflage war in kurzer Zeit ausverkauft. Wir freuen uns festzustellen, dass dies nicht nur ein flüchtiger Erfolg war ein halbes Jahr nach seinem Erscheinen wurde dieses Werk vom Ausschuss für finnische Buchkunst als einer der schönsten Landschafts- und Bildbände Finntands in die "Kollektion der Elitebücher" aufgenommen. Aus diesen Gründen und ermutigt durch zahlreiche Anfragen beschloss Valitut Palat, das Werk in einer englisch-deutschen Version herauszugeben. Die Illustration blieb unverändert, aber der Text muste gekürzt werden, wobei das Interesse der ausländischen Leser berücksichtigt wurde. Für diese Arbeit bedankt sich der Verleger Valimt Palat herzlichst bei Veikko M. Neuvonen und Arno Rautavaara.
