Exam informationOverviewThe Cambridge First Certificate Examination in English consists of five papers. Each paper tests a different area of your ability in English and is worth twenty per cent of your total result. After you take the exam you will receive a grade: A, B and C are pass grades; D, E and U are fail grades.Paper 1 ReadingThis paper contains four parts. Each part has at least one text with a task. There is a total of 35 questions. A variety of types of texts may be used, including letters, advertisements, extracts from works of fiction, newspaper articles and information from brochures. You will have 1 hour and 15 minutes to answer all the questions. There are three main types of task:1Multiple matching: this may involve, for example, matching headings to their appropriate paragraphs in a text or deciding which of a number of places or people specific sentences are referring to. (See examples on pp. 10-11 Exam focus, Exercise 2 and pp. 130-131 Reading, Exercise 3.)2Multiple choice questions: in this case you will have to choose answers or finish sentences. (See example on pp. 68-69 Reading, Exercise 3.)3Gapped text: in this case you are given a number of sentences or paragraphs which have been removed from a text. You must decide where they should go in the text. (See example on p.85 Reading, Exercise 4.)Paper 2 WritingIn this paper you have two tasks. You will have 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete the two tasks and you will be required to write between 120 and 180 words for each task.Part 1 is compulsory and requires you to write a 'transactional' letter based on information and prompts. (See example on p.20 Exam focus, Exercise 1-)In Part 2 you have a choice from four tasks. These will be a selection of the following:a letter, which could include a 'letter of application' (See example on p. 12 Writing, Exercise 1.)an article (See example on p. 126 Exam focus, Exercise 2.)a report (See example on p. 73 Exam focus, Exercise 2.)a discursive composition (See example on p. 156 Writing, Exercise 3).a descriptive composition (See example on p.81 Writing, Exercise 1.)a narrative composition (See example on p.44 Writing, Exercise 3.)a composition, article, report or letter on one of the background reading texts (See example on p.51 Writing, Exercise 2.)Paper 3 Use of EnglishThis paper contains five parts with a total of 65 questions. You will have 1 hour and 15 minutes to answer all the questions. The five different parts are as follows:Part 1: this consists of a multiple choice cloze text. This is a text with 15 gaps, followed by 15 four-option multiple choice questions. The focus is on vocabulary. (See example on p. 143 Use of English.) Part 2: this consists of an open cloze text. This is a text with 15 gaps which you must fill with an appropriate word. The focus is on grammar and vocabulary. (See example on p. 135 Exam focus.) Part 3: this consists of 10 'key' word transformations. You are required to complete a sentence using a given word, so that it means the same as a previous sentence. The focus is on grammar and vocabulary. (See example on p. 83 Exam focus, Exercise 2.) Part 4: this consists of an error correction text. This is a text where some lines are correct and some contain an extra and unnecessary word which must be identified. The focus is on grammar. (See example on p.28 Exam focus, Exercise 2.)
