Overview
The Cambridge First Certificate Examination in English consists of five papers. Each paper tests a different area of your ability in English and is worth twenty per cent of your total result. After you take the exam you will receive a grade: A, B and C are pass grades; D and E are fail grades.
Paper 1 Reading
This paper contains four parts. Each part has at least one text with a task. There is a total of 35 questions. A variety of types of texts may be used, including letters, advertisements, extracts from works of fiction, newspaper articles and information from brochures. You will have 1 hour and 15 minutes to answer all the questions.
Part 1: Multiple matching
You match headings or summary sentences to each

example (0) at the beginning. (See similar tasks on
pp. 36-37: pp. 58-59; pp. 130-131.)
Part 2: Multiple choice
You choose between four alternatives to answer
questions or complete statements about a text. There
are 7/8 questions. (See Exam Focus pp. 64-65 and
similar tasks on p. 89 and p. 157.)
Part 3: Gapped text
Sentences or paragraphs have been removed from a text. You decide where in the text these sentences or paragraphs should be placed. There are 6/7 gaps in the text but 7/8 sentences or paragraphs. The first gap is an example (0). (See similar tasks on pp. 22-23, pp. 68-69, p. 85, pp. 98-99 and pp. 120-121 and Exam Focus on pp. 114-115.) Part 4: Multiple matching
