The Hair on Paul Vine's Head
They all became quite weak with laughter when Paul Vine came into the classroom. He did look very funny indeed, as if someone had tried to crop his hair with a hedge cutter. And as if that were not enough, they had then taken a pot of green paint and daubed his hair with it. Paul tried to slip past Miss Teller's desk unnoticed by holding some papers over his head.
They knew then why he was so late for school. Paul was usually one of the first to arrive. He would wait for the others outside the school and play tricks on them. Sometimes, if there was enough time, they would go to the railway cutting; there was always something going on there. But today he came in at the very last moment, when everyone else was already sitting down.
"Paul," said the mistress, "don't behave like a clown. Take those silly papers off your head."
"The papers aren't silly. Miss. It's his head." That was Leo Baker, of course. He always dotted all the i's, because his father was a professor.
