ON THE ROAD WITH FODOR'S the first thing I do is cast around among my friends and colleagues to find someone who's just been where I'm going. That's because there's no substitute for a recommendation from a good friend who knows your tastes, your budget, and your circumstances, someone who's just been there. Unfortunately, such friends are few and far between. So it's nice ro know that there's Fodor's Hawai'i '99. In the first place, this book won't stay home when you hit the road. It will accompany you every step of the way, steering you away from wrong turns and wrong choices and never expecting a thing in return. It includes a wonderful, full-color map from Rand Mc-Nally, the world's largest commercial mapmaker. Most important of all, it's written and assiduously updated by the kind of people you would hit up for travel rips if you knew them. They're as choosy as your pickiest friend, except they've probably seen a lot more of Hawai'i. In these pages, they don't send you chasing down every town and sight in the Islands but have instead selected the best ones, the ones that are worthy of your time and money. To make it easy for you to put it all together in the time you have, they've created short, medium, and long itineraries and, in cities, neighborhood walks that you can mix and match in a snap. Just tear our the map at the perforation, and join us on the road in Hawai'i. About Our Writers Our success in helping to make your trip the best of all possible vacations is a credit to the hard work of our extraordinary writers. A 17-year resident of Honolulu, updater of the O'ahu (in which her Close-Up on Hawaiian music appears) and Lana'i chapters, Marfy Wentzel is a prolific freelance writer whose articles have appeared in publications around the world, including American Way, Modern Bride, and ALOHA Magazine. A specialist in the Hawai'i dining scene, she has coauthored cookbooks with two of the state's top chefs—Sam Choy and Roy Yamaguchi— but she's equally happy earing fresh mango on the beach at sunset. Her toddler daughter, who has already visited every Hawaiian island, is sure ro lead the next generation of Fodor's writers. Betty Fullard-LeO/ a resident of the Islands since 1962, writes extensively about destinations, lifestyle, art, food, and culture in the Aloha State. Her work on Fodor's Hawai'i over the years has been invaluable; this year she was responsible for the Big Island (where her Close-Up on hula appears), Kaua'i, and Moloka'i chapters. She's a contributing food editor for Hawai'i magazine, and previously she was editor of Pacific Art & Travel and associate editor of ALOHA Magazine. Betty and her husband, Ainsley, are valued members of the Hawai'i community and are out and about the Islands frequently. Pablo Madera, our Maui updater, is a freelance journalist, jazz drummer, and ethnobotanist who has made Maui his home base for 25 years. When he's not pursuing research projects on various Pacific islands, he tries to keep up with banana production on his small farm, which is off the road to Hana. Jennifer Crites, a freelance journalist who's lived in Honolulu for 23 years, applied her knowledge gained from being a Hollywood Reporter correspondent to writing about movies filmed in Hawai'i in the Books and Videos section in the Portraits chapter. Jennifer also wrote about the state's fascinating flora and fauna in a Close-Up for the Maui chapter and the native peoples' unique mythology for the Kaua'i chapter. Editor Anastasia Mills had previously been to 49 of the United States, so her first trip to Hawai'i while researching this book was extra special for her, as she now has visited all of the states. Some say she saved the best for last, and Stasha is not going to put up a fight about that. She spent a week on Kaua'i and found it to be paradise; most striking to her were the miles and miles of beautiful, empty beaches. She would like to start a letter-writing campaign to convince Alan Wong (of Alan Wong's in Ho- V: V i li , ! V') '.l ¦
