FOREWORD
We last published an individual Guide to Hungary in 1975, and ceased to issue it thereafter, defeated by the fact that tourism at that point was not sufficient to keep an annually updated work afloat. For five years we were without any separate book on any Eastern European country, and then in 1980, we launched our Guide to Eastern Europe, which has been steadily popular ever since.
The main reason for this new situation has been that travel to Eastem bloc countries has been definitely on the increase for several years now. Although all her neighbors have shared in the boom, it has been Hungary that has led the field and, as the most acceptable face of the Eastem Bloc to Western travelers, she now has a flourshing tourist trade going, developing every year. For Hungary is a country with a great deal to offer—fascinating art collections, historic cities, resort areas, sports, magnficent food and wine, and the chance to see an entirely different way of life. And all at prices that, if not bargain, are at least highly competitive with those in the West.
We would like to thank our founder, Hungarian-bom Eugene Fodor, for writing an introduction to the country he loves so well; E. George Mad-docks, our re visor for Hungary, for his ever-meticulous work on our behalf; László Boros, Editor-in-Chief of Corvina, for his constant help and interest; and Gabor Tarr, Managing Director of Danube Travel in London, for his invaluable help and encouragement over the years.
For the convenience of readers who wish to visit Eastem Europe, but want to limit their trip to Hungary, we have abstracted most of the material in this book from our current Guide to Eastern Europe, with added material. We hope that you will find it of help to you on your trip, and would greatly welcome any comments that you may have on your retum home. The opinions and experiences of our readers are always of great assistance to us in creating future editions—and especially where Eastem Europe is concemed. The normal traveler often encounters a quite different level of involvement from that met by our professional writers.
