HOW TO USE THIS BOOK
It is fairly easy to learn the words of a foreign language. It is much harder to use them properly in sentences. Every language has its characteristic structures^ and mastering these is the main part of learning the language^ Foundations of English is de-signed to help especially in acquiring a thorough grasp of the structures of current English.
The student must imitate good models, and repeat them so often that the structures he learns become automatic. The teacher's job is to provide the good models, and to provide them in the right order so that the student can grasp them. Much of this book consists of suggestions for this kínd of practice.
Great care has been taken that the structures should lead on, one to another, as logically as possible. What is learnt in one lesson is used in teaching the next. The student's own language need not be used much.

These spoken drills are the basis of ail the other teaching.
