Preface
In "Atomic and Free Radical Reactions" an attempt was made to discuss all elementary reactions of gaseous organic compounds in detail. The first part of the book dealt with free radical mechanisms in thermal and photochemical reactions, while the latter part consisted of a systematic survey of individual elementary reactions. A number of members of the Editorial Board of the American Chemical Society Monographs, and Prof. Linus Pauling in particular, considered that the book would be of some value as a textbook if it were not for the necessarily high cost. At the suggestion of Dr. F. W. Willard and of the publishers the writer has therefore made the following abridgment for textbook use.
The longer monograph has been cut down, in the first place, by eliminating, except for a few typical examples, the latter systematic part. The earlier chapters dealing with free radical mechanisms have been shortened by omitting the thermal and photochemical reactions of the less important substances. Those reactions which have been retained have, however, been discussed in complete detail. This was done because it was felt that, even for use as a text, the value of the book would be mainly due to the completeness of the discussion of typical individual elementary reactions. From such a discussion the reader should be able to obtain a proper view of the accomplishments and shortcomings of investigations in this field.
