SPECIAL FEATURE THE FULLERENE RESEARCH SCENE OF THE MID-90'S Tibor Brauni, András Schubert^, Gábor Schubert, Lilian Vasvárp 1 Institute oflnorganic and Analyrical Chemistry, L. Eötvös University, P.O.Box 123, H-1443 Budapest, Hungary 2 Information Science and Scientometric Research Unii, Hungárián Academy of Sciences, P.O.Box 1002, H-1245 Budapest, Hungary During the 14 years since their discovery, fullerenes have seen a tremendous amount of interest dedicated to the investigation of their synthesis, properties and prospective applications. The recent monograph by Dresselhaus et al. [1] truly reflects these efforts. The awarding of the 1996 Nobel Prize in chemistry to Curl, Kroto and Smalley came as a convincing proof of the utmost recognition of the field. The "epidemic" of fullerene research [2] appears to ragé in full swing. The compilation and publication of a comprehensive bibliography of the joumal literature on fullerene research [3] provides a convenient opportunity to reveal somé statistical characteristics of the fullerene research landscape of the mid-90's. A totál of 4311 papers by 6866 authors of 62 countries published in 375 jouraals during the period 1994-1996 were included in the bibliography. Their influence can be judged from the 10698 citations they received in 1997 (citation data are based on the Science Citation Index CD-ROM Edition, 1997 annual cumulation). Table 1 presents a) the 10 most productive journals and b) the 10 journals with the highest citation/paper impact (only journals with at least 10 papers in the bibliography were considered). There are three titles excelling both in quantity and quality (impact), while the impact list is töpped by the two archetypal rivals, Science and Nature. The 11 papers (there is a tie in the lOth place) most cited in 1997 are collected in Table 2. The titles witness that the topics of greatest impact seem to be centered on the nanoscale materials science and solid state structural aspects of fullerenes, including their electrical properties, as well as on the
