Foreword
A Conference on ' Fundamental Mechanisms of Photographic Sensitivity' was held in the H. H. Wills Physical Laboratory of the University of Bristol from 28 to 31 March 1950. This was the third in a series which began with an Easter Conference at Liége^ arranged by Professor A. Hautot in 1948 and continued with a Conference at Zürich^ organized by Professor J. Eggert in 1949.
The following Committee was responsible for the general organization of the Bristol Conference :
Professor N. F. Mott (Chairman), E. R. Davies, P. W. Harris, G. B. Harrison, J. L. Moillet, J. W. Mitchell (Secretary).
The detailed programme was prepared by the Secretary who also made the local arrangements for the Conference and acted as Editor of the Proceedings.
Over one hundred visitors representing ten different countries attended the Conference and their entertainment, including the catering arrangements and the excursions to Lacock Abbey and Wells, Glastonbury and Cheddar, was made possible by financial contributions to the Conference funds from : The Royal Photographic Society, The British Council, Kodak Ltd, Ilford Ltd, Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd, Elliott Bros Ltd, Neville Brown and Co. Ltd, and the University of Bristol.
The main theme of the Conference was selected on account of the developments in the theory of photographic sensitivity which have taken place in recent years. The discussion of many of the experimental papers which were presented at the Conference centred round the theoretical interpretation of the results and the Editor has attempted to review the position as it appeared to him at the conclusion of the Conference in a paper on ' Lattice Defects and Latent Image Formation in Silver Halides
The Editor wishes to acknowledge the valuable assistance which he has received from members of the staff of the Kodak Research Laboratories at Harrow, particularly from Dr W. F. Berg who translated a number of the papers and undertook the revision of the page proofs of the Proceedings.
