INTRODUCTIONLeft The 'foot' maze at Conholt Park, Hampshire, England. Above 'Sea Change' sculpture by George Cutts in Hat Hill Copse, Sussex, England. My aim in writing this book has been to gather together and illustrate outstanding examples of what is new, interesting and likely to stand the test of time in gardening and garden design as the old century gives way to the new. Unavoidably, the gardens are a personal choice, although I have tried to respect the views of leading gardeners in the five continents discussed in the book when making my selection. The gardens I have presented here are the work of many talented people. Some are controversial in their approach, setting out to astonish or even unsettle the visitors to their gardens. On the other hand, some gardens, such as the beautiful creation of Princess Sturdza in France or Caroline Tisdall's garden at Conholt in southern England, are included not because they represent a new style of gardening, but rather a new commitment to ecological principles.I have included the original work of Martha Schwartz because it epitomizes American vigour and daring, and thewori< of the Popes at Hadspen House in England as a wonderful example of what an educated eye can bring to the creation of a herbaceous border Their work illustrates the increasing trend for people trained in the fine or decorative arts to display their talents in the garden. The unique wori< of Charies Jencks in Scotland is here because there is nothing like it anywhere in the worid. Jencks bases his landscaping on the principles inherent in post-Einsteinian physics, but the observer does not need to understand its complexities in order to be stunned and enchanted by the results. The Casses' sculpture gardens at Hat Hill Copse in southern England exemplify the marked increase in the imaginative placing of outdoor sculpture, while Keir Davidson's transformation of a stretch of countryside in New York State shows how the manipulation of quarried stone and water systems is increasingly used to transform entire landscapes. The garden which spans both the indoors and the outdoors is another important trend.
