FOREWORD
following the successful Second International Symposium on Gas Chromatography held in Amsterdam in 1958, it was decided by the Gas Chromatography Discussion Group to hold subsequent symposia alternately in Great Britain and in other European countries. The third symposium was therefore held in Edinburgh on 8, 9 and 10 June, 1960. The Society for Analytical Chemistry agreed to join with the Gas Chromatography Discussion Group in organizing the meeting and an organizing committee was set up under the chairmanship of Mr R. C. Chirnside, the President of the Society for Analytical Chemistry. The committee consisted of:
Mr R. C. Chirnside (Chairman) Mr D. H. Desty
Mr L. Brealey (Secretary) Mr A. N. Harrow
Dr A. J. Amos (Treasurer) Dr J. H. Knox
Mr R. P. W. Scott (Editor) Dr M. A. Pyke
Dr D. Anderson Dr J. H. Purnell
Mr J. Brooks Dr M. M. Wirth
Invitations to submit papers for inclusion in the programme were published in appropriate journals and many papers in excess of the number required for the meeting were received. An editorial committee, comprising Mr J. Brooks, Mr D. H. Desty, Dr J. H. Purnell and Mr R. P. W. Scott, was set up and selected twenty-nine of the most suitable papers for inclusion in the programme.
The symposium was held in the fine Assembly Rooms at Edinburgh and the programme was divided into three sessions entitled 'Apparatus and Technique', 'Theory and Application', and 'General Applications'. The meeting was attended by over 500 delegates, including visitors from twenty different countries. Delegates and their guests were invited by the organizing committee to an informal reception held on the eve of the first session. The Lord Provost of Edinburgh and the British Petroleum Company Ltd. generously provided two excellent receptions on the evenings of the two days following. In keeping with the arrangements for the previous two symposia, an instrument exhibition was held showing the more recent developments in commercially available gas chromatographic apparatus. Visits to local industries were arranged for Saturday, 11 June, and were well attended. The organization by the ladies' committee of entertainments for the guests of delegates was particularly appreciated.
The Scottish section of the Society for Analytical Chemistry made the excellent local arrangements for the meeting, and the organizing committee r ¦
is also indebted to Dr and Mrs Wirth for their work in arranging the industrial ; f'
visits and the ladies' excursions. /
Thanks are also due to Mr Kirkby of Bruce Peebles Ltd. for his assistance
