Preface
A substantial part of the practice of anesthesia is devoted to ventilation of the patient's lungs and to the administration of oxygen and inhalation anesthetics (Figure i), during which many questions about anesthetic administration and ventilation are raised in the mind of the clinician (Figure ii). This book addresses these questions and offers brief answers.
In the introduction, justification for monitoring gases and oxygenation is presented. Next comes a primer on clinical gas monitoring and pulse oximetry. The remainder of the book comprises an outline of concepts underlying the uptake and distribution of anesthetics, anesthesia breathing systems, ventilation and perfusion, and the relevant technology of monitoring.
The book is kept brief because it was written for the busy clinician. For physiologic, physical, or engineering details, the reader is referred to more exhaustive treatises listed in the references.
