HE PROMlNENTSCHOLARSfeaturedin this volume explore gendered innovations in science and engineering; that is to say, they document how gender analysis, when turned to science and engineering, can profoundly enhance human knowledge. This is where the action is today. This volume provides, where possible, concrete examples of how taking gender into account has yielded new research results and sparked creativity by opening new questions for future research. Several government granting agencies, such as the National Institutes of Health and the European Commission, now require that requests for funding address whether, and in what sense, sex and gender are relevant to the objectives and methodologies of the research proposed. Few research scientists or engineers, however, know how to do gender analysis. The purpose of this book is to shed light on the how and why.
This volume emerged from an international workshop held at Stanford University's Michelle R. dayman Institute for Gender Research in 2005. We are grateful to the National Science Foundation (SES-0U4706) and the Gabi-lan Provost's Discretionary Fund, Stanford University, for funding for this project. Thanks, too, to Shannon Gilmartin, Michelle Gale, Jane Gruba-Chevalier, Andrea Henderson, Haley Minick, and Jeanette Jenkins, who supported the workshop and volume.
