Foreword
Chemistry is the science that concerns the study of matter. Learning about chemistry is arguably necessaxy because the way we manipúlate matter now has an important, practical impact in areas of medicine, energy, food production, and synthetic materials. Through our collective experience as instructors in the classroom and practicing chemists, Darrell Ebbing and I have gained valuable insight into aspects of chemistry that can both help and stimulate the learner. General Chemistry introduces today's students to the foundations and frontiers of chemical science, thus providing them with a path to a thorough understanding of the principies of chemistry. The book's presentation of these basic principies is enhanced by numerous examples, marginal notes, and problems that weave into the text the excitement and challenge of chemistry as it is practiced today. From research topics under study by the leading chemists in the world—such as catalysts for nitrogen fixation—to large-scale industrial processes involving the application of chemical principies—such as the electrochemical generation of chlorine— General Chemistry presents students with the chemistry worth knowing and encourages them to learn ánd to apply the basic concepts of the science.
As Consulting Editor for this project during the last four years, I have read and reread the successive drafts of the manuscript. My direct contributions to the development of the manuscript have been in the form of making suggestions for improvement, implementing many examples of modern chemical research, and adding new applications of basic principies. Further, I have gone over the numerous reviews of each chapter submitted by aca-demic reviewers across the country and helped formúlate strategies for bringing General Chemistry closer to the ideal text we all seek. Darrell Ebbing has created an excellent textbook. I and other members of the pub-lishing team have worked to complement his achievement by heightening interest, providing consistency and balance throughout, and responding to the needs of today's students and instructors of chemistry. We have been uncompromising with respect to our goal of presenting the principies of chemistry so that they can be clearly understood and successfully applied to solving problems of practical and intellectual interest.
