Introduction to Third Edition
This book is primarily intended for use with pupils taking public examinations in geography at fifteen or sixteen, although it may well be of somé assistance in European and Modern Studies courses. Since it was first written a number of major economic, social and political changes have occurred in Western Europe. In this, the third edition, recognition of these developments has been made: the statistical information has been updated wherever possible, somé case studies have been replaced or reorganized, and the final section redrafted to include detailed work on topics such as North Sea Oil and Gas.
Now, more than ever, this is essentially a source book; it contains a wide rangé of independent studies. For the most part these are organized within a national frame-work, the recognition of which is so important in
Western European areal studies. Even so the vast majoritv can be lifted out of this context at will and used in systematic or concentrically based courses.
A quick turn of the pages will show that the studies take a variety of forms. Narrative text is important but a considerable amount of space is alsó given to photo-graphs, maps and quantified information.
As in previous editions, the questions form an integrál part of the material. Somé of them are designed to practise information retrieval and classification, others to elucidate specific geographical skills and concepts. The totál number of questions may well exceed individual needs but their rangé of difficulty allows for maximum selectivity.
