Author's Note
The time that proved available for the writing of this book was unavoidably brief. This makes my gratitude all the greater to those of my friends who responded to an urgent appeal for help in the undertaking. Their enrichment of the book ought to be visible at a number of points. I would especially mention Mr Edwin Barker, the Rev. Peter Bide, Dr Kathleen Bliss, the Bishop of Bristol (Dr Oliver Tomkins), the Reverend Adrian Carey, the Bishop of Chichester (Dr Roger Wilson), Dr A. C. Craig, Archbishop Lord Fisher of Lambeth, Dr Norman Goodall, Sir Kenneth Grubb, Canon Hugh Herklots, Bishop Leslie Hunter, Miss Janet Lacey, Dr R. C. Mackie, Miss Sigrid Morden, Canon David Paton, Dr Ernest Payne, Dr Harold Roberts, the Bishop of Rochester (Dr David Say), the Reverend B. R. H. Spaull and Dr R. D. Whitehorn.
Once again I am deeply indebted to my secretary, Winifred Weddell, for most willing and efl&cient help in many ways. I would also express my gratitude to the staff of the library of Sion College. Without their help and the availability of that splendidly comprehensive collection the work could not have been done.
