PREFACE
In preparing this book, I have become indebted to many individuals and institutions. Professor Stephen Fischer-Galati encouraged me to write this study. Reginald C. Stuart read the manuscript and provided invaluable suggestions on style and idiom. Michael Foley saw substantial portions of the final draft, and offered helpful insights. Éva Windisch kindly permitted access to her unpublished manuscript. Jon Berlin let me use his research material. Béla Bellér provided valuable insights into Hungary's complex nationality problems. 1 am grateful to the University of Prince Edward Island stenographic pool personnel, and particularly to Nadeen Robb, who typed the final draft.
1 wish to thank the staffs of the West German Federal Archives in Koblenz; the Political Archives of the Foreign Ministry in Bonn; the Austrian State Archives in Vienna; the National Széchenyi Library, the Hungarian National Archives, the Parliamentary Archives, and the Statistical Bureau Archives, all in Budapest; and various other library staffs in Europe and North America. The Kussbach family has kindly given me access to the Franz Kussbach Nachlass in the Koblenz Archives. The Interlibrary Loan staff at the U.P.E.L has been most helpful and understanding.
My work has been facilitated by grants from the Canada Council and the U.P.E.l. Senate Research Committee. For the past five years, my wife Marita and daughter Clara-Maria have patiently borne the burden of my preoccupations. But other people, far too numerous to cite individually, have stamped their influence on this endeavour. Whatever their contributions, all errors of fact and judgment are mine alone.
