IntroductionI Getting Down to Business in English is a two-book course fór students who have a practical need fór English in their work or social life. Many such students may have learned somé English before bút will have forgottén most of it. At the outset, therefore, the course is elementary. It assumes very little previous knowledge of the language on the one hand and a fairly high motivation to leam on the other. While maintaining the careful grading characteristic of modem language teaching, the course moves rapidly through the basic structural features of English. Because the course is directed at the functional needs of the leamer, it ensures that the student is able to use the English he is learning from early on. Among the many situations covered in Book 1 are travel, offices, banks, restaurants, hotels, buying and selling goods, using the telephoné and simple letter-writing.
